Why arrangements may need to change
A variation may be needed after a move, a change in school, a child's changing needs, new safeguarding information or repeated failure of the current pattern. The focus remains the child's welfare.
- Relocation or changed travel arrangements
- School, work and holiday changes
- Age-related contact needs
- New safeguarding or welfare concerns
Agreement or court application
If parents agree, record the new plan clearly and consider whether a consent order is appropriate. If agreement is not possible, advice is needed about the application, evidence and any MIAM exemption.
Common questions
Can a Child Arrangements Order be changed?
Yes. Parents can agree a new arrangement or ask the court to make a different order where circumstances or the child's welfare require it.
Do I need a new application after every change?
Not always. Minor agreed changes may not require an application, but significant or disputed changes should be recorded and addressed with legal advice.
