Cafcass and Children Court Reports

Section 7 Reports and Cafcass Solicitors

A Section 7 report helps the court assess a child's welfare and make recommendations about living arrangements and time with parents. We help you understand the process and respond constructively to the report.

What Cafcass may do

Cafcass may speak with parents, undertake safeguarding checks, consider the child's circumstances and make recommendations. The report is evidence for the court, not the final decision.

  • Safeguarding checks
  • Interviews with parents
  • The child's wishes and feelings where appropriate
  • Recommendations about contact and safeguards

Responding to a report

Read the report carefully and identify factual errors, omissions and recommendations that need clarification. A focused response should explain the practical proposal and any evidence supporting it.

Common questions

Is a Section 7 report binding on the court?

No. The court considers the report alongside all other evidence and makes its own welfare decision.

Can I challenge a Cafcass recommendation?

Yes. Explain the precise concern, provide relevant evidence and make a realistic alternative proposal through the proper court process.
